About

capa21-leadership-team

CAPA21 is an Asian American Pacific Islander political action committee that invests in progressive candidates, AAPI field operations, and projects to improve AAPI participation in the political process.

Our vision is of a country where AAPIs have a powerful presence and role in all branches and levels of government and politics, achieved through AAPI voters who are engaged, informed, and empowered.

We will work together with existing AAPI political efforts and aspire to complement, not compete with, existing progressive organizations. Our PAC has a national reach, but is initially focused on California and the West Coast.

Leadership

CAPA21 has roots in the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans, founded by Dale, Maeley, and other leaders in 1988 as one of country’s first AAPI PACs.

Our Goals

  • More strategically finance progressive candidates, with special attention to national candidates who have a proven track record advancing AAPI interests, and candidates from South Asian, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, and other under-represented communities;
  • Fund progressive PACs, coordinated campaigns, and projects operating substantive AAPI field operations;
  • Support increasing the appointments of AAPIs to government positions at the federal and state levels; and
  • Invest in improving AAPI political data, especially in swing states where AAPI voters can make a difference.

Candidates

Our priorities for donations to progressive candidates are: (1) Presidential, U.S. Senate and U.S. House candidates who advance AAPI interests; and (2) California state-level candidates who advance AAPI interests and are qualified and well-positioned for higher office.

We will generally refrain from donating to non-federal candidates from other states, except AAPI candidates whose election would be groundbreaking for AAPIs, or who we believe to have a significant role to play in advancing AAPI interests nationally.

We will generally refrain from donating to California municipal-level candidates, except those who advance AAPI interests, are well-positioned for higher office, and at least one of the following: (a) belong to an under-represented AAPI community (e.g. Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, South Asian), or (b) are AAPI running in a low-AAPI district/area.

All candidates requesting support from CAPA21 are required to complete a candidate questionnaire.
