We mourn the loss of a giant – Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “There are literally not enough words to describe the transformational impact she had on the lives of millions of Americans as an advocate and a jurist,” said Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawai’i) earlier this evening.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) declared that she will not vote to confirm a Trump appointee to replace Justice Ginsburg, honoring the Justice’s dying wish that only the next President should fill her seat. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) released a statement saying that a Trump nominee would get a vote in the Senate. That must not happen.
The battlefield has now shifted to the Senate. We must pressure those Republican Senators who may agree with Senator Murkowski that the right thing to do is leave Justice Ginsburg’s seat for 2021. We cannot afford a Supreme Court – with another Justice picked by Trump – that could hand a contested 2020 election to Trump.
CAPA21 and the Senate Majority PAC will work to empower Senate challengers and help force their vulnerable Republican opponents to stand down on filling the seat and follow Senator Murkowski’s principled stand.
We mourn Justice Ginsburg’s passing, and we will honor her legacy by fighting for her seat.
