The CAPA21 Asian Pacific American political action committee supports the California redistricting effort to balance the Texas power grab commanded by Donald Trump.
Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation passed by the California Legislature, which will have voters decide on a California redistricting plan in a special election on November 4, 2025.
Most of us believe voters should pick our leaders—politicians should not pick their voters. But as the MAGA regime attempts to seize permanent power, we are seeing a blatant and dangerous effort to silence the voices of the American people.
President Trump has ordered his allies to carve up our country into districts that allow them to hold onto power, no matter the will of the people. In Texas, we see Governor Abbott doing Trump’s bidding, drawing new lines to silence the voices of Texans and seize more power over our families.
These fascist tactics will not stop with Texas. They will spread across the country, aiming to silence Americans based on what we look like, what’s in our wallets, or where we live. Once again, marginalized and underrepresented people, including many Asian Pacific Americans, will be further disenfranchised.
But California is drawing the line. Governor Newsom and California leaders are empowering voters to combat these anti-democratic efforts head-on. They are allowing the people to take power back into our own hands to ensure that our elections reflect the will of the people.
California is leading the way by standing up to this power grab and showing what it looks like when a state rises up for itself. We must encourage other state leaders to do the same. This is more than a fight over lines on a map; it is a fight to protect our fundamental freedom to have a voice and a say in the decisions that impact our lives.
