The Associated Press declared Prop. 50 passed! Thank you for voting in this important election. And special thanks to allies like CAA for its incredible work on voter engagement in AANHPI communities.
CAPA21 was proud to be part of the YES on 50 statewide coalition. As we mentioned in our Aug. 22 endorsement, Trump and MAGA Republicans are rigging congressional maps across the country to silence voters like us—just one part of Donald Trump’s systematic attacks on democracy. Proposition 50 is California’s response. It helps level the playing field and advances fair representation in the 2026 elections.
Across the country tonight, people used their votes to elect Democrats and repudiate the Trump regime.
New York City voters elected Zohran Mamdani as mayor. The first South Asian American and the first Muslim elected to lead NYC, Mamdani energized voters, with turnout surpassing two million — the highest participation in a mayoral race since 1969.
Ghazala Hashmi won the Virginia lieutenant governor’s race. She is the first Indian American and first Muslim to win statewide office in Virginia. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia won their gubernatorial races.
Several Asian American mayors were re-elected. Michelle Wu in Boston ran unopposed. Aftab Pureval won another term, defeating JD Vance’s half-brother. (Bruce Harrell is running for re-election as Seattle mayor, but we don’t have final results for that race yet.)
We don’t forget for a moment that while these victories are positive indicators of what can happen when people mobilize, there are still hundreds of thousands hurting from the government shutdown, delayed or missing SNAP benefits, and tough economic times.
Thank you to those organizing, surviving, and showing up. Let’s keep pushing forward.
