CAPA21 Update from Maeley Tom: We’re donating to APA political groups in Georgia, Orange County, Nevada, and Pennsylvania

Your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 in cumulative new donations.

By Maeley Tom, CAPA21 Co-Chair

Happy Holidays!

I’m so proud to be a co-chair of CAPA21 with Ginger Lew, Tamlyn Tomita, and Dale Minami. I was part of the founding of this PAC’s predecessor group, the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans, established in 1988 after the successful campaign to defeat Dan Lungren’s appointment as California State Treasurer.

I wrote about this historic moment, recalling how the Washington Post noted that the Asian Americans behind Lungren’s defeat “revolutionized the political image of what once was California’s quietest minority.” More than three decades later, we have made incredible progress, but it remains largely an uphill battle for us.

Which is why we’re asking for your support. We are close to reaching our $100,000 matching campaign goal. When Ginger’s email went out, we were nearly at 80 percent of our goal. Now we’re at 90 percent at closing in!

Your donation could be the one to help us cross the finish line!

Because of your support, we are approving donations to:

  • $5,000 for Georgians Advancing Progress PAC (GAPPAC) – GAPPAC was instrumental in helping turn out a record Asian American vote in Georgia (almost 4% of the electorate) in both the 2020 Presidential Election and 2021 US Senate Runoff. The expected efforts in 2022 will be similar to 2020 and 2021, with outreach in multiple languages, phone and postcard campaigns, particularly directed to electing selected Democratic and Asian-American candidates in state and local elections in Georgia, including Rep. Marvin Lim, Sen. Michelle Au, and Rep. Bee Nguyen.
  • $5,000 for Asian Americans in Action (Orange County, Calif.) – Asian Americans in Action is the headquarters for AAPI progressives in Orange County, home of the third largest AAPI population in the U.S. We advocate for progressive policies on behalf of AAPI communities, promote awareness of Asian American and Pacific Islander issues, and elevate the voices of people in our communities through voter activism, coalition building, and cultivating progressive AAPI candidates for local office.
  • $5,000 for Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance (Pennsylvania) – API PA exists to build long-term power for APIs in Pennsylvania, by coordinating political, electoral, and legislative work to hold our elected officials accountable, engaging in culturally competent and linguistically accessible direct voter contact with our communities, and building solidarity with other aligned communities of color across the state.
  • $5,000 for One APIA Nevada – One APIA Nevada is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting and supporting the Asian Pacific Islander Americans in Nevada. We advocate for progressive policies that benefit the hardworking members of our community. Nevada is home to over 300,000 Asian Pacific Islander Americans, comprising around 10 percent of the total population.

In a future round of giving, we will include additional Asian Pacific American support in Georgia towards fighting voter suppression and registering and activating Democratic voters. Our investment in APA voters will be a crucial part of helping Stacey Abrams win the Governor’s race!

As we mentioned in previous emails, donations were approved to:

  • $5,000 to Senator Rafael Warnock in Georgia
  • $5,000 to Senator Mark Kelly in Arizona
  • $5,000 to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada
  • $2,000 to Calif. Attorney General Rob Bonta

Ocampo, Joan Haratani, Clement Kong, Kei-on Chan and Sonia Ng, Don Tamaki, Minami Tamaki LLP, Dianne Fukami, and Ai Mori and Dale Minami.
